Sign, Sign, Everywhere A Sign...

...blocking out the scenery, breaking my mind. Do this, don't do that. Can't you read the sign?" The Five Man Electrical Band's 70's hit "Signs" could apply to any effort to read the "signs" in Northern Virginia's real estate market because there are so many conflicting indicators out there. As we have noted in this space on many occasions, market conditions vary widely depending on price and geography, and no one should feel confident saying that the "bottom" has been hit. Yet, there are now more positive "signs" than negative.

My goal is helping you find the most advantageous, desirable, and fitting home for today . . . With an eye towards the future. Specializing in Bryce Mountain Resort properties and surrounding areas.

With the feel of fall in the air, it's time to think about getting your home ready for colder weather. Much of the routine maintenance that needs to be done this time of year will not only help keep you cozy this winter, it will also save money on your heating bill and protect your biggest investment-your home. Late Fall is also an excellent time of year to do some final pruning around the yard. Avoid pruning spring flowering shrubs (such as Azalea and Forsythia) in the fall as it will remove flower buds set earlier in the year. The only pruning that should be done in the fall is the removal of dead or diseased branches. Inspect your trees, shrubs, and woody perennials, and trim away any dead wood. Remove and discard any branches infected by disease or cankers. Remove branches damaged by storms since broken branches are more susceptible to disease. Save other pruning jobs for early spring or right after the plant blooms.

Careful pruning techniques help insure the health of your shrubs. Here are some helpful tips:

  • Never try to cut more wood than your saw or clippers are designed to cut. Use a small saw or loppers to remove medium sized or larger branches. Small stems and twigs should be clipped with hand pruners.
  • Avoid use of shears unless you are maintaining a formal hedge.
  • Never cut a branch flush with the main stem.
  • Leave the stem collar intact to promote rapid healing of the stem cut.
  • Never leave a stud which can provide an opening for wood decay.
